Back to Our Roots

The concept of going "Back to our roots" can be very confusing and misleading. It is scary to think that we have "progressed" so far past our roots that we now can only depend on unnatural and unsustainable resources. What exactly does it mean to go back to our roots and how can going back become progressive?
